1.     My Holiday

Whats so great about a Motorhome and Australia?

Australia is simply one of the best places in the world to hire a Motorhome or Campervan.  The freedom of uncrowded roads, beautiful campsites, first class facilities, friendly locals and no set itinerary make Motorhoming the perfect holiday.  And kids love it…

Where can I get more information for planning my holiday?

There are many websites that you can visit to learn more and plan your travels.  Tourism Australia has an excellent website feel free to take a look if you are interested in the outdoors and the national parks that stretch the length of Australia.

Can you suggest places to see and things to do?

Contact us for any help you need and we are more than happy to make suggestions and offer advice.

Can I sleep anywhere or do I have to sleep in a campground?

As a general rule you should be okay to park up anywhere outside of city and town boundaries unless there are obvious signs prohibiting overnight camping.  The beauty of motorhoming in Australia is the total freedom it gives you, allowing you to access some of the most beautiful and unique campsites in Australia.

I have children.  What can you recommend?

Motorhoming with children is a great experience.  Not only do the children think the motorhome is a Wendy House on wheels, but most campgrounds are very well equipped for families.  Children tend to make friends easily, and then when everyone's had enough you can pack up and move on.  In terms of a vehicle, the more space the better.  Contact us and we can recommend the best vehicle to suit your needs with easy access and good floor and storage space.

Can I get transfers from the airport or my hotel to collect my Motorhome?

Some companies offer airport transfers either at the beginning and/or end of your hire.  Some will even do hotel transfers.  These details, in relation to each vehicle, can be seen on the vehicle search results page.

I have lots of luggage!

Storage area can cause problems so it is important you prepare correctly.  We suggest you bring soft bags, as opposed to hard suitcases, so that they can be crammed and squeezed into every available corner.  Some companies provide free and secure luggage storage while you are traveling.  If this is important to you, let us know and we can recommend a company that will look after your excess luggage.

Should I pre-book campgrounds?

Generally no – however it is a good idea to pre-book campgrounds over the peak school holiday months of late December and January to ensure a powered site in popular tourist centres.

When should I book my motorhome?

Motorhomes and Campervans are extremely popular in the summer months and all year round in Queensland, Darwin and Perth and for this reason we suggest you book as early as possible.  It would be near impossible to secure a Motorhome at the last minute and even with a months notice, availability can be difficult.

2.     Driving in Australia

What licences do I have to have?

You need a full drivers licence in English from your home country.  If your drivers licence is not in English you will need an International Drivers licence as well. Have a look at Australian govt websites if you require further information.

Where can I drive my motorhome in Australia?

You can drive your rental vehicle on most tarseal or well maintained roads. There are some restrictions to where you can take your vehicle and these are listed with each rental companies terms an conditions, please feel free to ask us if you need more information about this.

Example

Restrictions

Campervans and Motorhomes can only be driven on sealed roads or well-maintained unsealed roads leading to holiday and/or national parks - max 20 km one-way. 4WD's are allowed on recognized 4WD tracks. Special terms and conditions apply for travel in the following areas: Cape York, Simpson Desert, Gunbarrel Highway, Canning Stock Route, Oondnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, the Warburton Road, Tanami Track, Gibb River Road and any other area in excess of 100 km's from the nearest sealed road. No vehicle is to be taken into salt water.

What side of the road do you drive on in Australia?

In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road. Make sure you familiarise yourself with Australian driving laws before arriving.

What is the cost of petrol and diesel in Australia?

Currently, in January 2015, diesel prices are around $0.80 per litre and unleaded petrol is around $1.37 per litre. The government charges diesel vehicles  a road user charge.  Note that some rental companies will on-charge this to you at the vehicle return.  This will be stated in their terms and conditions so please read these carefully.

What is the speed limit in Australia?

The open speed limit in Australia is 100 to 120 kilometres per hour.  In urban areas the speed limit is 50 kilometres per hour.  We advise you to travel in large motorhomes on the open road at 90km/h.

Where can I empty my waste?

You can find dump stations at campgrounds throughout Australia and other various sites that are well sign posted.  The rental company will provide a list of where you can find these.

3.     My Vehicle

Aren’t all motorhomes and campervans the same?

No way!  As campervan travel becomes more popular even the most discerning traveller will find a vehicle to suit their needs.  Vehicle age and quality varies dramatically so please choose carefully to avoid any disappointment when you pick up your vehicle.

Are there age restrictions on hiring a motorhome or campervan?

Yes.  All companies vary but the general rule is 21 years old and over.  Some companies require drivers over 75 to produce a medical certificate.  These conditions are clearly outlined in the terms and conditions of each rental company.

I can only drive an automatic transmission!

Most rental companies generally have 5 speed manual vehicles.  However, some have a small number of automatic vehicles.  These are popular so we suggest you request these as soon as possible.  If having an automatic transmission is important to you, please contact us.

How long do the batteries last in my motorhome?

Most Motorhomes run on a dual battery system.  This means there is a battery separate to the engine battery and that you do not need a 240 volt power source to run appliances while the engine is switched off.  It is impossible to run the engine battery flat.  This allows for great freedom and independence.  However, most microwaves and power plugs in Motorhomes will not operate unless they have a 240V source.

Is there heating on board?

This varies between rental companies.  It is possible to hire a vehicle with a full gas heating system installed so you never get cold!

How can I fill up the water tank?

Australian tap water is safe to drink so filling up at campgrounds or service stations is perfectly adequate.

What does a Motorhome come with?

Most vehicles come fully equipped with all living equipment including linen, towels, kitchen utensils, cooking utensils and cleaning items.  For a full list of what is included in each vehicle please look under the 'more info' heading in our search area.

Yes, all vehicles come with a standard insurance policy that covers you for any damage to the vehicle. There is an excess that applies and varies from AU$400 to AU$7500 which must be paid at vehicle pick up and is refunded upon the safe return of the vehicle. Please ask our friendly staff about the individual terms and conditions for information relating to this and various excess reduction options.

Can I reduce the insurance excess?

Yes, there are vehicle reduction options available which will reduce the excess you are liable for in the case of an accident or other vehicle damage and the excess deposit required at vehicle pick up.  Please see individual terms and conditions for information relating to this in our search area or contact us.

What is the vehicle security deposit and how do I pay it?

A vehicle security deposit is a refundable bond payable to ensure the safe return of the vehicle.  It covers cleaning and refuelling fees should the vehicle be returned in an unsatisfactory condition. This deposit only applies when an all inclusive package has been purchased.

What is included in an all-inclusive package?

All inclusive packages vary from company to company. In general they will reduce your excess to $0, provide camping chairs, a table and baby seats.  Please read the conditions to determine the individual inclusions for each company or contact us.

Yes but some companies will charge a one way fee of around AU$150 to AU$350.  Most details of these charges are in the search area in the extra costs field. Any query, just ask our friendly staff.

How is the price calculated?

Motorhome and Campervan prices are calculated on a per calender day basis.  That is, the day you pick up your vehicle and the day you drop it off are counted as two separate days, regardless of the time.  For example, if you pick up on a vehicle on Sunday and return the vehicle the following Sunday you will pay for 8 hire days.

How do I pay for my booking?

You can pay by credit card on our secure payments site or by bank transfer.  Please note that we cannot confirm your booking until we have received the funds.  Credit card payments ensure immediate action in securing your vehicle.  We only authorise the card details and do not process until after we have confirmed availability.
